Mayada’s Note:  For more coverage in the back, the bit where she folds the short end together, just don’t fold it together at all.  That way, when you fold it around back to cover the band, you’ll have more cover for the back of your neck.

Washing Your Hijabs

I saw someone’s comment about how my prior comment should be a manual on how to wash your hijab, so…here you go!

lol.

One way to wash your hijab is to use the washing machine, no dryer.

If you’re going to use your washing machine, you NEED to wash your hijabs seperately from all of your clothes.  If you’re going to wash your hijabs with your underwear, ONLY wash them with your panties.  Bra clasps will not only ruin your hijabs by either poking or tearing holes in them, but you will have a huge tangled mess when you open the machine.
The washing machine should be set on delicate wash.   And it’s up to you if you want to use cold or hot water.  Hot water is going to pull the dyes out more, so if you’ve never washed a new hijab, then you need to treat them like jeans and only wash that hijab that matches THAT hijab colour (for example, red hijab with other red or pink hijabs).

Hang to dry.  If you live in Egypt, you know how easy it is to just hang dry your clothes.  If you don’t live in Egypt or have never hung your clothes, you can do it in many ways.

If you have a basement:  With a hanger, loop your hijab through it and then just hang the hanger on the rafter.

If you have non-wooden stair rails or a half wall (half wall that seperates the basement stairs to the landing):  Just hang your hijabs over that.

If you have a deck with railing:  Just hang your hijabs over that, but if it’s covered in bird poop, don’t even bother.  I mean, really.

If you have a brick patio:  Lay them out and use some rocks to keep the hijabs down at the ends.  Brick patio + sun = nice and warm hijabs.  And they dry faster.

If you have a curtain rod on your window:  With a hanger, loop your hijab through it and then just hang the hanger on the curtain rod.

Personally, I like to hang the hijabs to dry.  Not only does it NOT lose the colour from going through the drying cycle, but hang drying keeps it from shrinking, getting weird folds, and personally, they just feel that much better wearing them.  lol.

For hand washing:  Just like washing clothes, you seperate your darks, from the colours, from the whites.  For me, darks = colours, so they all go in one bucket.  lol.

  1. Put the hijabs in the wash bucket…bin?…bucket and turn the water on kind of hot, but not scalding hot.
  2. Add the soap at halfway and stir the hijabs around in it.
  3. Stop the water after the bucket has been filled.  Leave the hijabs to soak for about 30 minutes.  I won’t lie, when you get back in 30 minutes, it’s going to look sick because 1.  you’re seeing all the dye that’s being released from your scarves and 2.  you’re seeing all the dirt, sweat, and residue come off the scarves.  Yuck.
  4. Empty the bucket/bin and start rinsing your scarves under lukewarm/cold/hot (whatever you decide) water.
  5. Once you think you’ve gotten a majority of the soap out, just put it back in the bucket, refill with water, and let it soak again for an hour or two.
  6. After the hour or two, go back, rinse, refill, soak for another hour.
  7. Hang dry.

Personally, hand washing is better for me.  I at least know who washed it, know that they WON’T get tangled, and I know how long I’ve been soaking them for.  If you soak them longer or shorter than the times I put, it’s no big deal.  Nothing’s going to happen, unless you mixed colours with other colours and it might bleed or something, then you’ll have issues.  lol.

I mean…

No, I lol’d.  :D

Insha’Allah, this helps and if it doesn’t, well…sorry.

Asalaam alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatu.
